A young gorilla rescued from wildlife trafficking at Istanbul Airport is now the focus of a public naming campaign organized by Türkiye’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Authorities intercept endangered baby gorilla at Istanbul Airport

On Dec. 22, 2024, customs officers from the Ministry of Trade uncovered an endangered gorilla being smuggled through Istanbul Airport.

The shipment, originating in Nigeria and destined for Bangkok, contained the baby gorilla hidden in a cage. Officers seized the animal, which lacked proper documentation.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry took the young gorilla under its protection. According to the ministry, personnel from the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks have been providing care and rehabilitation. Officials stated that the gorilla’s health is improving and that the animal remains under observation.

Ministry invites public to suggest name using social media campaign

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry launched a campaign to name the baby gorilla on its social media account. The post read, “We are looking for a name for the much-loved baby gorilla. Share your suggestions with the hashtag #BenceIsmi.” A photo of the gorilla accompanied the message, which quickly gained attention.

The campaign became a trending topic online, with users flooding the platform with suggestions. The hashtag #BenceIsmi continues to generate widespread engagement as people rally around the rescued animal.
