Turkish flags unfurl on Istanbul bridges to honor July 15 coup attempt victims
In a joint initiative by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications, the Istanbul Governorship, and the July 15 Association, massive Turkish flags were displayed on Istanbul’s Yavuz Sultan Selim, Fatih Sultan Mehmet and July 15 Martyrs’ Bridges.
At 6:00 a.m., a team of officials hoisted 18-meter long and 12-meter wide flags on Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. By 8:00 a.m., the Turkish flag adorned the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, followed by the July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge at 10:00 a.m.
The July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge ceremony saw the presence of Istanbul Deputy Governor Ozlem Bozkurt Gevrek, July 15 Association President Ismail Hakki Turunc, and families of those killed during July 15 coup attempt.
Speaking to the press, Turunc reflected on the event’s significance, marking the 8th anniversary of the July 15 coup attempt. He emphasized the importance of remembering those killed and honoring the veterans.
“As the Turkish nation, we continue our journey, fully aware of our responsibilities toward the nation’s survival and the state’s future,” Turunc stated.
‘Victory of the nation’
Highlighting the symbolism of the flags, Turunc noted: “This year, besides Istanbul’s 3 bridges, we are hoisting our giant flags on the Osmangazi and Canakkale Bridges for the first time. These flags will instill pride in our nation and symbolize our unwavering commitment to our heritage.”
Turunc passionately underscored the flag’s significance as a symbol of independence.
“Our ancestors sacrificed their lives so that our flag could wave freely in these lands. Today, millions are ready to defend our flag with the same spirit and determination,” he said.
He warned against any attempts to undermine the flag, emphasizing that such actions would face resolute opposition.
For the first time, flags were also displayed on the Osmangazi and Canakkale Bridges, allowing passersby to share in this moment of national pride.
Additionally, alongside the Turkish flags, flags of the July 15 Association and banners reading “Victory of the Nation” were displayed on the bridges.
