Turkish Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz, emphasized the importance of creating a safe and economically viable environment in Syria to enable the voluntary, dignified and secure return of millions of displaced Syrians.

What he said

  • “Syria belongs to its people. After enduring immense suffering and a historic struggle, they are beginning a new chapter.”
  • “A peaceful transition to a regime that reflects the will of the Syrian people is critical, prioritizing inclusivity and reconstruction over conflict and division.”

Big picture

Yilmaz underscored Türkiye’s commitment to:

  • Supporting Syria’s political and economic reconstruction while preserving its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
  • Ensuring all ethnic and religious groups—Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, Alawites, Sunnis, Christians—can coexist peacefully.
  • Eliminating threats posed by terrorist organizations and empowering Syrian Kurds to free themselves from oppression by such groups.

Why it matters

Türkiye has been hosting millions of Syrian refugees and plays a pivotal role in shaping Syria’s future. A stable Syria is vital for regional security and economic prosperity.

What’s next

  • Türkiye will collaborate with international institutions to support Syria’s rebuilding process.
  • Yilmaz reiterated Türkiye’s solidarity with the Syrian people, stating, “As in their most challenging times, we will stand with our Syrian brothers and sisters today and tomorrow.”

Worth noting

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also expressed hope for a Syria where peace and coexistence prevail.

  • “We envision Syria where no one is marginalized, oppressed, or deprived of their rights—a place where all identities coexist in harmony,” the president said.
