Greek border guards patrolling near Soufli in the Evros region were fired upon by unknown individuals located on the Turkish side of the border.

According to a statement from the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.), one border guard was injured in the gunfire and was immediately transported to the Didymoteicho hospital for first aid.

The full statement from EL.AS. reads:

“Today, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at approximately 18:20, in a border area near Soufli, Evros, Greek border guards who were patrolling the area during an operation to prevent the illegal entry of migrants from Türkiye into our country, were fired upon by unknown individuals on the Turkish side.

One Greek border guard was injured in the gunfire and was promptly taken to the Didymoteicho hospital for first aid.

The incident is being investigated by the relevant Greek authorities.”

Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to identify the assailants and determine the motive behind the attack.

The Evros region, a frequent route for migrants attempting to enter Greece from Türkiye, has been the site of heightened tensions and increased security measures in recent years.
