Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to participate in a 2-day NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, emphasizing collective counterterrorism efforts and Türkiye’s stance on NATO members’ relationships with terror groups

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, is scheduled to attend a two-day gathering of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, beginning Wednesday, as announced by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The ministry stated on Tuesday that the foreign minister will engage in bilateral discussions alongside the main meeting.

In light of NATO’s 75th anniversary, a commemorative event will be held during the session, according to diplomatic sources.

The upcoming meeting is expected to cover a range of topics including general deterrence, counterterrorism efforts, developments in Ukraine, preparations for the Washington Summit and the aftermath of Sweden and Finland’s recent inclusion into the alliance.

During his attendance, Fidan plans to emphasize the importance of NATO members working collectively to combat terrorism.

He will convey Türkiye’s expectations regarding efforts against the terrorist organization PKK and its affiliates, sources indicated.

Additionally, he will underscore Türkiye’s stance that it is unacceptable for certain NATO members to have ties with terrorist groups.

Fidan will also highlight concerns about members imposing sanctions and restrictions on one another within the defense industry, noting that such actions contradict the alliance’s spirit and compromise NATO’s security.

He is expected to express Türkiye’s perspectives on effectively ensuring the defense and security of Europe.

Sources mentioned that the foreign minister will likely hold separate meetings with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Bulgarian Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel on the sidelines of the main event.
