President Erdogan reiterates Türkiye’s support for Palestinian resistance group Hamas, warning against Israel’s expansionist aims during a parliamentary group meeting

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s steadfast support for Hamas in its quest for Palestinian independence and defense of Anatolia. Speaking to the parliamentary group Wednesday in Ankara, Erdogan underscored Türkiye’s commitment to standing by Hamas in its struggle for territorial sovereignty.

Erdogan warns of Israel’s expansionist ambitions

Erdogan cautioned against Israel’s expansionist aspirations, warning of potential aggression extending beyond Gaza to Anatolia if left unchecked.

He condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others involved in what he termed as genocide, vowing accountability for their actions.

“Israel’s ambitions won’t halt in Gaza; if left unchecked, this rogue state will inevitably aim its expansionist aspirations toward Anatolia, driven by its fantasies of a promised land,” Erdogan warned.

Pledging justice for genocide

He emphasized that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and all those implicated in genocide would be held responsible for every life lost.

“On Nakba, the Day of Catastrophe, we reaffirm our unwavering support for Palestine and the Palestinian cause with all our resources,” he declared.

“We will also ensure those responsible for genocide face justice,” he added.

Palestinians commemorate Nakba

May 15 holds solemn significance for Palestinians globally as they commemorate the Nakba anniversary – a day marked by remembrance and reflection.

This day signifies the 76th anniversary of Nakba, or the “Great Catastrophe,” which began in 1948.

This solemn day commemorates the profound devastation inflicted upon Palestinian society and homeland, leading to the enduring displacement of the majority of Palestinian Arabs.

While May 14th commemorates the establishment of the State of Israel, May 15 holds a distinct significance for Palestinians. It serves as a day of solemn remembrance and reflection – symbolizing the ongoing catastrophe that has persisted for 76 years.

Palestinians, both within their homeland and abroad, observe this day through various events and activities, each serving to honor the profound historical significance of this tragic event in their collective memory.

The Nakba anniversary coincides with a devastating Israeli offensive on Gaza on Oct.7, resulting in the deaths of over 35,000 Palestinians.

According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, since 1948, approximately 134,000 Palestinians and Arabs have lost their lives, both within and outside Palestine.

Erdogan signals progress on new constitution

President Erdogan also affirmed that Türkiye would draft a new constitution, emphasizing a balanced approach without haste or undue delay.

He emphasized the importance of preserving the aspiration for a democratic constitution amid the transient dynamics of daily politics.

Erdogan also expressed support for the parliamentary speaker’s efforts in this regard.

“We see the benefit in concluding consultative contacts without rushing, yet not excessively prolonging, and taking concrete steps towards a new constitution,” he stated.

Highlighting the need for a more conciliatory political atmosphere in Türkiye, Erdogan asserted: “There is a necessity for moderation in politics, and as always, we are actively contributing to this endeavor. We have consistently opposed and will continue to oppose polarization and tension resulting from factionalism.”
