Drinking water crisis in Yalova, Turkiye: 4 workers detained in chemical spill probe
Yalova, Turkiye, experienced chemical contamination in its drinking water supply from the Kurtkoy Stream, leading to a temporary water cutoff and an ongoing investigation.
The contamination was discovered in the Gokce Dam Kurtkoy diversion system after foamy water was observed, raising concerns about possible chemical pollution.
In response, local authorities shut off the water as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Yalova’s Mayor Mehmet Gurel reassured the public that the disruption was due to a “technical cleaning process.”
He emphasized that there was no evidence of external interference, though police and gendarmerie are investigating the possibility of deliberate contamination.
“If any foreign substances, such as detergent or other chemicals, were poured into the stream, the relevant authorities are conducting thorough investigations. Please rest assured that the water cutoff is solely due to technical reasons,” he said.
Four individuals have been detained in connection with the incident.
