Yusuf Dikec returns to Türkiye as Olympic silver medalist, national icon
In the Paris 2024 Olympics, Turkish sharp-shooter Yusuf Dikec, alongside Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, secured a historic silver medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.
Upon returning to Türkiye, Dikec emphasized that his success represents not just his own achievement but a milestone for Turkish sports as a whole.
“Yusuf Dikec is merely a name and a symbol. I am incredibly happy to be in the spotlight as a Turkish athlete rather than just as Yusuf Dikec,” he said.
24 years of dedication behind silver medal
Dikec highlighted that the medal represents 24 years of relentless dedication and hard work.
“People sometimes say, ‘You won the medal easily, with your hands in your pockets.’ That’s the external perception. The reality is 24 years of effort. I train six days a week, doing 4-5 hours of training each day,” he explained.
Dikec reflected on his long journey, which included various international successes before finally achieving an Olympic medal.
Future ambitions, quest for gold
Looking ahead, Dikec shared his aspirations for future competitions.
“If I had won the gold medal at these Olympics, I would have considered retiring. But I’m in great shape, and so is Ilayda. God willing, we will win the gold medal in 2028 and retire then,” he stated.
Dikec’s unwavering commitment and drive continue to fuel his ambitions for a future Olympic win.
Family support: Motivational role of his daughter
Dikec’s 9-year-old daughter, Basak, played a crucial role in motivating him before the Paris Games.
Basak’s encouragement and tactical advice were pivotal.
She shared, “I wished him success and gave him advice. I motivated him not to be upset if he didn’t win first place.” Dikec described how talking to Basak was a significant source of motivation and emotional support.
Inspiring next generation of shooters
At 51 years old, Dikec hopes his achievements will serve as an inspiration to young athletes.
“I started sports later in life, at 28. Today, after 24 years, we’re at a point where an Olympic silver medal is seen as a disappointment. I hope this will inspire many young people in our country to take up the sport,” he said.
Dikec’s story demonstrates that with hard work and determination, extraordinary achievements are possible, encouraging the next generation to pursue their dreams.
Yusuf Dikec’s triumph is not just a personal victory but a significant achievement for Turkish sports on the global stage. His continued dedication and inspirational journey will undoubtedly motivate future athletes and leave a lasting impact on the sports world.
