Türkiye’s Olympic history: 104 medals and counting ahead of Paris 2024
With 102 athletes gearing up to compete at the upcoming Paris Olympics, Türkiye will be looking to add to its impressive Olympic medal tally. The country boasts a total of 104 medals won throughout its Olympic history.
According to an Anadolu Agency report on Türkiye’s Olympic history and preparations for the upcoming Games, Turkish athletes have won 41 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals. Turkish competitors have achieved success across nine sports.
The distribution of Türkiye’s 104 Olympic medals is as follows: 66 in wrestling, 11 in weightlifting, nine in taekwondo, seven in boxing, four in karate, three in athletics, two in judo, and one each in archery and gymnastics.
Rome 1960: Türkiye’s most successful Olympics
The most successful Olympics for Türkiye was the Rome 1960 Games. With 55 athletes participating, Türkiye won seven gold and two silver medals, marking its highest gold medal count in a single Olympics.
Türkiye ranked as the sixth most successful nation in the 1960 Rome Olympics.
Tokyo 2020: Most medals won
Türkiye won the most medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, securing two gold, two silver, and nine bronze medals with a team of 108 athletes.
The introduction of karate, which won four medals, contributed significantly to this total.
Olympics without medals
Türkiye first participated in the 1908 London Olympics under a special invitation, with gymnast Aleko Mulos being the first official Turkish athlete. Türkiye missed the 1920 Antwerp, 1932 Los Angeles, and 1980 Moscow Olympics due to wars. The country won its first medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Besides 1908, Türkiye did not win medals in the 1912 Stockholm, 1924 Paris, 1928 Amsterdam, and 1976 Montreal Olympics.
