Acun Ilicali, the owner and chairman of Hull City, has become a target of criticism in England as his club struggles to climb out of the Championship’s lower ranks.

The backlash intensified after Hull City’s recent 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough on New Year’s Day, which marked their 13th loss of the season.

Fans, local media criticize Acun Ilicali as Hull City remains in relegation zone

Hull City’s latest defeat, sealed by a stoppage-time goal, has reignited frustration among fans and local media. Many have pointed to Acun Ilicali’s recruitment strategy as a key factor in the team’s underwhelming performance.

Local reports described the loss as a “transfer reminder” for Ilicali, urging the chairman to make necessary changes in the January transfer window. The team’s struggles have left supporters questioning whether Hull can avoid relegation.

So far this season, Hull City has accumulated just 22 points from 24 matches. Their defensive issues were apparent in the match against Middlesbrough, where poor concentration in the dying moments allowed the opposition to snatch victory.

Former Hull captain Curtis Davies criticized the team’s defending, calling it “frustrating” and avoidable. Speaking on Sky Sports, Davies noted: “Abu Kamara, Steven Alzate, and Lewie Coyle all failed to engage properly in the decisive moment, allowing Middlesbrough to secure an easy tap-in.”

Ruben Selles faces major challenges during January transfer window

Manager Ruben Selles, who took over the reins earlier this season, now faces what many are calling a defining transfer window. Hull City’s squad has suffered from injuries, suspensions, and underperforming players, leaving the team in dire need of reinforcements.

Despite some solid performances under Selles, including wins against Swansea City and Blackburn Rovers, the team remains in the relegation zone.

The January transfer window is seen as critical for Hull’s survival hopes. Acun Ilicali has publicly pledged his support for Selles, promising funds to strengthen the squad. However, the team’s recruitment strategy has come under scrutiny, with past signings failing to deliver the desired impact.

Hull’s summer transfer dealings included significant turnover, but many new arrivals have struggled to adapt. Local analysts have urged the club to avoid another “scattergun approach” to signings, emphasizing the need for experienced and motivated players who can make an immediate difference.

Hull City faces a decisive month with key matches and transfer decisions

Hull City’s upcoming fixtures in January, including a Yorkshire Derby against Leeds United, will likely play a crucial role in determining their fate. With the team’s offensive struggles and inability to capitalize on opportunities, fans have called for the addition of a reliable goal scorer.

Former Nottingham Forest skipper Luke Chambers remarked that Hull’s inability to find the back of the net remains a significant weakness, saying, “City needs players who can hit the ground running.”

Selles has acknowledged the need to strike a balance between defensive solidity and offensive productivity. Speaking after the Middlesbrough match, he admitted, “We’ve become more solid at the back, but we need to work out how to spring attacks and keep the ball longer in transition.”

With only 5 months left in the season, Hull City’s survival hangs in the balance. Acun Ilicali and Selles face immense pressure to deliver results, with fans and media closely watching the club’s actions in the transfer market.
