Galatasaray clinches 24th Turkish Super League title with victory over Konyaspor
Galatasaray secured their 24th championship title in the Turkish Super League season, defeating Konyaspor 3-1
In a dramatic finale to the Turkish Super League season, Galatasaray emerged victorious against Konyaspor in an away match, securing their 24th championship title on Sunday. The night’s star was undoubtedly Mauro Icardi, whose stellar performance, marked by two crucial goals, propelled Galatasaray to victory.
The match, played in Konya, saw Galatasaray clinch a 3-1 win, with goals from Mauro Icardi (2) and Berkan Kutlu, while the home team managed to net one through Prip.
Under the guidance of coach Okan Buruk, Galatasaray finished the season with an impressive 102 points, three points clear of their closest rivals, Fenerbahce, setting a new record in the process.
This triumph marks Galatasaray’s 24th championship win in the 66 seasons of the league, solidifying their position as the most successful team in Turkish football history, with a lead of five titles over their nearest competitor, Fenerbahce.
With this victory, Galatasaray stands on the brink of adding a fifth star to their jersey, reserved for teams that have won the league title five times. As the only team entitled to wear four stars on their jersey, Galatasaray’s dominance in Turkish football continues unabated.
For coach Okan Buruk, this marks his third championship win as a manager. Having previously tasted success with Istanbul Basaksehir in the 2019-2020 season, Buruk replicated his triumph last season with Galatasaray.
With the latest victory, Buruk solidifies his status as the most successful figure in Turkish Super League history, having won the championship seven times as a player and now twice as a coach. If Galatasaray lifts the trophy again next season, Buruk’s tally of championships will rise to an unprecedented 10, further cementing his legacy in Turkish football.
