Two earthquakes, measuring 5.2 and 4.2 in magnitude, struck Syria’s Hama province on August 16, 2024, causing tremors that were felt in Türkiye’s Hatay and Gaziantep provinces.

The quakes occurred three minutes apart and were recorded at a depth of 7 kilometers.

Earthquakes recorded near Turkish border

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter of both earthquakes was located 120 kilometers from Hatay’s Yayladagı district. The tremors were felt across southern Türkiye, including in Hatay and Gaziantep, raising concerns among residents.

Recent Seismic Activity in the Region

This seismic activity follows a similar earthquake that occurred three days earlier on August 13, 2024. The previous quake, also originating from Hama, Syria, measured 5.2 in magnitude and was felt across multiple provinces in southeastern Türkiye, including Osmaniye, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Kilis, Adiyaman, and Hatay. That earthquake was recorded at a depth of 19.38 kilometers.
