Türkiye set to expand its military presence in Syria: Report

Türkiye is set to expand its military presence in Syria following a security agreement between the Syrian government and the terrorist organization YPG, according to Turkish security sources.
Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly withdrawing from the region under pressure from Türkiye.
Türkiye’s military role expands in Syria
Fatih Atik, Ankara Bureau Chief for TGRT Haber, reported that Turkish forces will take on a greater role in Syria following recent diplomatic engagements between Türkiye and Syria.
“I spoke with several security sources. Türkiye’s recent diplomatic visit was crucial, and discussions regarding the agreement were on the table. Türkiye has expressed its concerns about the deal with the SDF. Moving forward, military relations between Türkiye and Syria will increase,” Atik stated.
He also noted that Türkiye currently controls a significant area in northern Syria and that plans for military bases are under discussion. “Three military bases were initially mentioned, but the number may change. They could be established in Aleppo or further south. More Turkish troops will be active in Syria,” he said.

YPG/SDF integrates with Syrian Army
The Syrian presidency confirmed that an agreement had been reached for SDF forces to integrate into the Syrian military.
The deal was reportedly signed between Ahmed al-Sharaa, a key Syrian government figure, and Ferhat Abdi Sahin, a senior SDF leader.
Following this announcement, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated Türkiye had made its position clear to the Syrian government, urging them to act in a way that aligns with Türkiye’s security priorities.
‘US withdrawal under pressure from Türkiye’
According to Atik, the U.S. is withdrawing from the region because of Türkiye’s growing influence and diplomatic pressure.
“The U.S. is leaving the region because of pressure from Türkiye. Turkish forces will take on more responsibilities in Syria,” he said.
He further claimed that the U.S. played a crucial role in pushing the SDF to sign the agreement. “The U.S. essentially forced Ferhat Abdi Sahin into a helicopter to sign this deal,” Atik asserted.

Türkiye-Syria relations, future developments
Atik suggested that cooperation between Türkiye and Syria is expected to strengthen.
“Türkiye’s role in the region will be felt more significantly. Events will accelerate in the direction Türkiye desires,” he added.
