Türkiye closely follows US movements in Syria: Security sources
Türkiye is closely monitoring U.S. policies in Syria and is prepared to offer substantial support for the war-torn country’s reconstruction and long-term stability, according to Turkish security sources speaking to the Türkiye daily.
Türkiye ready to assist Syria in reconstruction efforts
Sources indicate that Türkiye is committed to aiding Syria in rebuilding its economy, reviving trade and establishing state institutions if requested.
“Türkiye will provide every form of assistance to revitalize economic life, facilitate reconstruction, and establish a stable state system. No support will be withheld for military restructuring if needed,” security sources stated.
Maritime jurisdiction agreement with Syria on the horizon
Syria’s geographical significance as a gateway to the Mediterranean remains a focal point for future regional diplomacy.
Security sources highlighted the potential for a maritime jurisdiction agreement between Türkiye and Syria once political stability is achieved, suggesting it could shift regional dynamics.
“Such an agreement would strengthen the influence of both Türkiye and Syria in the Mediterranean. Lebanon, another coastal nation, also appears to align with Türkiye’s vision,” sources noted.
Türkiye watches US policy under Trump closely
With significant developments anticipated under former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, Türkiye remains cautious yet optimistic.
“Trump’s stance on withdrawing U.S. troops from Syria is crucial. If American forces withdraw, terrorist groups operating in the region would lose critical support,” the sources said.
They also emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing operations against PKK/YPG terrorists, asserting readiness for further cross-border military actions depending on Washington’s direction.
US presence in northern Syria: Control point, not a base
Reports regarding a U.S. military base in Ayn al-Arab were dismissed by the sources. Instead, they suggested that Washington might establish a control point to maintain influence and provide symbolic reassurance to its local allies.
“Currently, there is no significant movement suggesting the construction of a U.S. base. However, intelligence monitoring remains ongoing,” they added.
‘Terror-free Türkiye’ initiative gains traction
Amid discussions initiated by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli for a “Terror-Free Türkiye,” sources expressed cautious optimism about the potential for long-term peace. “There is hope for disarmament. If achieved, terrorist structures in Syria will weaken significantly,” said security sources.
However, they underscored that leaders of terror networks in northern Iraq, particularly in Qandil, might attempt to flee to European countries if pressured to disarm.
No amnesty for terrorists
Sources firmly denied any possibility of blanket amnesty for individuals associated with terrorist activities. “Those who surrender will face trial. If found innocent, they will be released. There will be no amnesty for terrorists,” the sources asserted.
