‘Recent developments in Syria reveal Assad’s allies are distracted,’ Blinken says
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday that recent developments in Syria show the Assad regime’s allies, Russia and Iran, have become distracted by other issues, which has allowed militants to make gains.
“What we’re seeing with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s (HTS) attack in Syria is that Assad’s key backers—Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran—are distracted, largely by problems of their own making. HTS appears to have taken advantage of this,” Blinken told reporters after a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting.
Blinken stressed the need to prevent further escalation in Syria and urged the protection of civilians while pushing for a political resolution based on a U.N. Security Council resolution.
He also reiterated the U.S. commitment to preventing the resurgence of ISIS, calling it a key security interest.
Cease-fire in Lebanon holding, Blinken says
Responding to a question about the cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel, Blinken said the agreement, reached on Nov. 27, is holding.
While there have been accusations of violations, Blinken emphasized the importance of addressing concerns through a monitoring mechanism established with France.
Both Israel and Lebanon, he said, want the cease-fire to continue, and the U.S. is committed to maintaining it.
Ukraine’s mobilization critical to war effort
Blinken also highlighted Ukraine’s need for further mobilization to counter Russia’s attacks, stressing that the U.S. will continue to support Ukraine with training and equipment for its soldiers.
He underscored the importance of ensuring Ukraine is in a strong position for any potential peace negotiations.
