Israel’s offensive on Lebanon destroys 37 towns, over 40,000 houses
The Israeli military has reportedly obliterated 37 towns and demolished over 40,000 housing units during its offensive on Lebanon that began last year, according to local media sources.
The destruction is said to be concentrated in an area spanning three kilometers from Naqoura to the outskirts of Khiam in southern Lebanon, as reported by the state news agency NNA on Tuesday.
Casualty figures continue to rise
Lebanese health authorities have reported more than 3,000 fatalities and nearly 13,500 injuries since the offensive commenced in October 2023.
Anadolu Agency reporters on the ground have documented widespread devastation across southern Lebanon, which has forced hundreds of thousands of residents to flee their homes.
Escalation of military operations
The Israeli air campaign has intensified since late September, primarily targeting what Israel claims are Hezbollah positions.
The expansion of the conflict followed more than a year of cross-border skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah, which escalated in tandem with Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip.
On October 1, 2023, Israel launched a ground assault into southern Lebanon, marking a significant escalation in military operations.
Impact on civilians, infrastructure
The large-scale offensive has left significant destruction in its wake, severely impacting both civilian lives and infrastructure. The displacement of residents from their homes has compounded the humanitarian situation, as aid organizations struggle to meet the needs of affected communities.
The ongoing conflict has drawn international attention, with various nations calling for de-escalation and urging both sides to prioritize the safety of civilians.
