Greek Cyprus has confirmed the purchase of the Iron Dome air defense system. This move is aimed at replacing aging Russian-made TOR and BUK systems, which are increasingly difficult to maintain due to parts shortages and sanctions.

Why it matters?

  • The acquisition is a key step in building a comprehensive air defense shield for Greek Cyprus.
  • The deal follows the head of Greek Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides’ talks with U.S. President Joe Biden, signaling progress in arms procurement.
  • The purchase reflects a shift in U.S. policy, as Washington now supports arms sales to Greek Cyprus after decades of an arms embargo.

Big picture

  • Additional deliveries of the Iron Dome are expected to complete the defense system.
  • Greek Cyprus is also set to receive French helicopters and is actively working to replace its aging Russian T-80 tanks with newer models.
