The number of students killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack targeting a girls primary school in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province has risen to 108, Iranian state media reported Saturday, after initial reports said five children had died.

The death toll from an attack Saturday on a school in Iran's south has risen to 108, the judiciary said, after the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on the Islamic republic.

The Iranian Red Crescent said the death toll from a strike on Saturday that hit a school in the country's south has risen to 108, after the U.S. and Israel launched a wave of attacks on the Islamic Republic.

"The number of student martyrs at Minab School has reached 108, and relief and debris removal operations are still ongoing," a spokesperson for the organisation said.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA said a primary school was targeted in a U.S.-Israeli strike in the city of Minab. Early assessments initially put the death toll at 40 schoolgirls.

"In this morning's Israeli missile attack on a girls' elementary school in the (Minab) county, 51 students have so far been killed and 60 students have been wounded," the county governor said.

State media said the death toll later climbed as rescue and recovery efforts continued.

Strikes and retaliations escalate

The attack came as Israel and the United States carried out joint strikes on Iran while negotiations between Tehran and Washington were ongoing.

Israel’s Defense Ministry said Israel launched a “preemptive strike” against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States had begun a “major operation” against Iran.

As part of the attacks, Iranian media reported strikes on the capital, Tehran, as well as the cities of Isfahan, Karaj, Qom, Tabriz, Bushehr, Kermanshah and Ilam.

Israel and Iran closed their airspace as Israel declared a state of emergency and air raid sirens sounded across the country.

Before Iran’s counterattacks, Israeli authorities issued warnings directing the public to seek shelter.

Iran’s military said it launched retaliatory attacks against Israel using dozens of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in response to the U.S. and Israeli strikes.

Iran also said it targeted U.S. bases in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan with missile attacks. Iranian media reported that the U.S. naval base in Bahrain was hit.
