Blinken urges final push for Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his latest visit to the Middle East, described the current situation as a “decisive moment” in efforts to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
Speaking alongside Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Blinken emphasized that this may be “the last opportunity” to achieve these goals.
“This is a decisive moment, probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire, and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security,” Blinken stated, according to Agence France-Presse.
Blinken’s visit, his ninth to the region since the October 7 attack by Hamas, is seen as a critical effort by the U.S. to push for an agreement. He underscored the importance of avoiding any actions that could disrupt ongoing negotiations.
Fraught moment in Israel
Herzog, who holds a largely ceremonial role, echoed Blinken’s concerns, stressing the urgency of bringing back hostages as soon as possible. “There is no greater humanitarian objective, and there’s no greater humanitarian cause, than bringing back our hostages,” Herzog said.
The ongoing talks have faced significant challenges, including what Herzog referred to as “the refusal of Hamas to move forward,” and Israel’s air strikes and assassinations to key members of Hamas, including Haniyeh.
Calls for action
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also weighed in, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to miss the opportunity to secure the hostages’ return. Lapid’s remarks on social media highlighted the growing pressure on Netanyahu from various factions within Israel.
Blinken’s mission
Blinken made it clear that President Joe Biden had sent him to ensure the agreement reaches completion. “It is time for it to get done,” Blinken said, stressing the need for decisive action to avoid escalating tensions in the region.
The secretary of state also warned against any provocations or actions that could derail the peace process or lead to further regional escalation. Blinken is scheduled to meet later with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, where further discussions on the ceasefire and hostage situation are expected.
