At least five Israeli soldiers were killed and more than 10 others wounded Monday in what Israeli media described as an “unusual” and “challenging” ambush by Palestinian resistance fighters in northern Gaza.
The attack, which targeted a group of at least 15 Israeli troops, was one of the most significant operations by Palestinian fighters in recent weeks, as Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip enters its tenth month. A formal investigation into the incident has been launched, according to Israeli reports.
Israeli outlets called the ambush a “difficult and extraordinary” development, reporting that the soldiers were caught off guard in northern Gaza. According to those reports, the first explosive device hit an Israeli tank.
A second targeted the initial rescue team, while a third struck a second rescue unit. A fourth explosive device and light weapons fire then hit wounded soldiers from the earlier blasts.
The Israeli military has not released further official details about the ambush.
Since Israel launched its offensive in Gaza in October 2023, more than 57,500 Palestinians — the majority women and children — have been killed, according to Palestinian health officials.
The escalation comes as U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. Speaking ahead of the talks, Trump said he believed a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas could be reached this week.
