A stampede occurred at the Umayyad Mosque in Syria’s capital, Damascus, following Friday prayers, resulting in at least three fatalities and five injuries, according to initial reports.

The incident took place as worshippers were leaving the mosque after the prayer service.

Local sources confirmed that the injured were assisted by fellow citizens inside the mosque before emergency services arrived.

Images posted on social media showed several people providing first aid to the wounded in the aftermath of the incident.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the stampede, and investigations are underway. The condition of the injured is also yet to be clarified.

The Umayyad Mosque, one of the largest and most historically significant mosques in Syria, is a key religious site in the region.
