Türkiye’s Gokgol Cave offers enchanting journey to visitors
Zonguldak’s Gokgol Cave, renowned for its galleries, stalactites, stalagmites, columns, travertines, and millions-of-years-old coral fossils, continues to captivate visitors. Attracting 60,506 tourists in 2024—the highest annual figure since its opening in 2001—the cave is poised to reach even greater milestones in 2025.
Ferhan Bostanci, Director of Cultural and Social Affairs at the Provincial Special Administration, emphasized the cave’s significance to local tourism: “Our goal for 2025 is to welcome 100,000 visitors. Gokgol Cave holds a vital place in the tourism landscape of the city.”
A living cave with scientific discoveries
Gokgol Cave is not only a natural wonder but also a scientific treasure trove. Recent studies by Turkish scientists led to the discovery of a new crustacean species, named “gammarus tumaf,” highlighting the cave’s ecological importance. Informative panels at the entrance provide insights into caves both in Türkiye and globally.
Visitors can explore the 875-meter section open to tourism, which boasts a walking trail, glass bridges, and viewing terraces. The cave’s clean air and microclimate further enhance its appeal.
Overcoming challenges to set records
Despite challenges such as two devastating floods in 2024, Gokgol Cave achieved a record-breaking year. Bostanci explained, “We aimed for 75,000 visitors in 2024, but flood damage forced us to close the cave for two months. Still, we recorded 60,506 visitors—a new milestone since 2001.”
Gokgol Cave’s enhanced infrastructure for accessibility
First discovered in 1976, the cave was developed for tourism in 2001 with funding from the Provincial Special Administration. A major restoration in 2016 included the installation of wooden stairs, walking paths, and bridges over the underground river. The site also became more accessible, accommodating visitors of all ages and abilities.
In 2021, the addition of a visitor center with promotional and souvenir units, as well as a cafe, further elevated the visitor experience. “Since these upgrades, we’ve seen a significant rise in visitor numbers,” Bostanci added.
Drawing tourists to Zonguldak
Traditionally overshadowed by nearby tourist hotspots like Safranbolu and Amasra, Zonguldak is now drawing more attention. “Through discussions with tour operators, we’ve successfully redirected many itineraries to Zonguldak. Gokgol Cave’s strategic location at the city entrance makes it a convenient stop for visitors,” Bostanci noted.
Visitor impressions
Muzaffer Kaya, who visited the cave with his wife from Istanbul, shared his enthusiasm: “Gokgol Cave is larger than any cave I’ve visited before. It’s well-lit, beautifully maintained, and an absolute delight to explore. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Zonguldak.”
With its breathtaking natural features and growing popularity, Gokgol Cave stands as a cornerstone of Zonguldak’s tourism ambitions for the future.
