Hidden paradise in Türkiye: Degirmendere Waterfall awaits discovery

Nestled in Kastamonu’s Senpazar district, Degirmendere Waterfall is one of the city’s hidden natural wonders, known only to the local community. Despite its breathtaking beauty, the waterfall remains largely undiscovered by the broader public.

Degirmendere Waterfall: A natural marvel with limited access
Located 15 kilometers (9.32 miles) from the Senpazar town center, the waterfall is inaccessible by foot. It can only be seen from Yorecek Neighborhood in Dere Village, where it cascades from 20 meters (65.62 feet) onto the rocks below.
The lush green surroundings and mesmerizing view captivate drone enthusiasts and nature photographers alike.
Nature photographer’s discovery
Nature photographer Kubilay Onurcan Calik told Anadolu Agency (AA) that he first heard about the waterfall from a local resident while shooting drone footage in the district.
“When we first visited the area, we never imagined there would be such a stunning waterfall. It’s a beautiful natural treasure that even the people of Senpazar and Kastamonu, let alone the whole of Türkiye, are unaware of,” Calik said.
Calik managed to capture the waterfall using a drone despite challenging conditions. “The region is full of steep and rugged cliffs, causing the drone’s signal to cut out. We had heard of drones crashing there before, but we took the risk. The breathtaking footage we captured made it all worthwhile.”
He shared the visuals with Senpazar District Governor Fatma Bilgin, who also admired the footage. “I hope our waterfall will be incorporated into Türkiye’s tourism scene in the near future,” Calik added.

A historical landmark with a lost legacy
Yuksel Erdogan, the head of Asikli Village, revealed that there was once a mill at the site of the waterfall. “The mill was destroyed over the years. Now, only its ruins remain. Previously, the paths to the waterfall were open, but they have since become overgrown and inaccessible,” he said.
