An underwater excavation of the world’s oldest known shipwreck, the Kumluca Middle Bronze Age Wreck, has been captured by underwater documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Tahsin Ceylan.

The excavation team, led by Assoc. Prof. Hakan Oniz, Head of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Akdeniz University, is conducting its research 50 meters deep in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Antalya.

Utilizing cutting-edge underwater archaeology technologies, the team is working to uncover and document the 3,600-year-old wreck.

Documentary filmmaker Tahsin Ceylan has recorded the meticulous excavation work taking place at the site. His footage reveals the team’s careful procedures and nearby marine life, including the scorpionfish and lionfish that inhabit the deep waters.

Ceylan described the experience of touching history and exploring this mysterious world as an incredibly rewarding feeling.

Oniz shared that the excavation, conducted in collaboration with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Akdeniz University, is progressing successfully.

He explained that the wreck likely belonged to a ship transporting copper ingots from Cyprus to Crete, which sank during a storm. The excavation employs advanced underwater compressors and other technologies to ensure safety at this challenging depth.

The artifacts uncovered are expected to be displayed at the underwater archaeology museum currently under construction in Kemer.

Archaeologists’ reflections

Archaeologist Aysegul Dadagul expressed her honor in participating in this historic excavation, stating, “Being deep underwater and touching history is truly wonderful. I believe we will uncover findings that will illuminate the past.”
