Türkiye’s Gaziantep weavers to prepare carpets for Umayyad Mosque in Damascus by Ramadan

Gaziantep’s skilled carpet weavers have taken on the monumental task of preparing carpets for the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria.
The initiative comes as a gesture of solidarity with the Syrian people, who are rebuilding their country after years of strife. The project aims to have the mosque ready in time for the first Tarawih prayers of Ramadan.
New chapter for Syria’s Umayyad Mosque
With less than two months until Ramadan, the people of Syria are racing against time to rebuild their lives and landmarks. Despite ongoing efforts, scars from the extensive destruction remain visible across the country.
Among the key restoration projects is the iconic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, which has become a symbol of resilience and renewal.
Gaziantep’s contribution to Syria’s recovery
Gaziantep Mayor Fatma Sahin announced that local carpet makers have volunteered to create new carpets for the mosque. “Gaziantep, a global leader in carpet production, is proud to undertake this meaningful task,” Sahin stated.
She further emphasized that the entire cost of the project is being covered by the generous contributions of Gaziantep’s carpet artisans.
“We have initiated the work, and the carpets for the Umayyad Mosque will be completed in time for the first Tarawih prayers,” Sahin shared on social media, expressing gratitude to those involved in the project.
Symbol of freedom and faith
The Umayyad Mosque, which marked a turning point for Damascus when the first Friday prayers were held following its liberation, is now being prepared to host Ramadan worshippers.
The project reflects a deep sense of unity and shared heritage between Türkiye and Syria, as Gaziantep steps up to play a significant role in this historic restoration effort.
