Turkish director’s film ‘Zemberek’ wins big at Spain’s film festival

Turkish filmmaker, actor and director Recep Cavdar’s latest creation, “Zemberek,” has returned from Spain with two prestigious accolades from the 13th RIURAU International Film Festival in Alicante.
Competing as a finalist, “Zemberek” clinched the “Best Cinematography” and “Best Editing” awards, further solidifying its impact on the international stage.
The film’s cinematographer, Ilker Berke, who tragically died in 2023, was posthumously honored with the “Best Cinematography” award. In an emotional tribute, Cavdar expressed his gratitude through a video message to the festival team on behalf of Berke.
He also shared the pride of representing Türkiye on the global stage for the second time with his films, adding that receiving the award in Berke’s name was particularly meaningful for the team.
Best editing award goes to Ahmet Kerem Acar
Editor Ahmet Kerem Acar was awarded the “Best Editing” prize for his work on “Zemberek.” In his video message, Acar dedicated the award to his late father, making the recognition even more poignant.
Shoot in the picturesque regions of Kars, Agri and Van, “Zemberek” tells the gripping story of Omer, a man struggling with the aftermath of his father’s death. The plot centers on his quest for revenge against Veysi, the person responsible for his father’s demise.
The film’s intense narrative, combined with powerful performances by lead actors Ufuk Bayraktar, Fulya Ulvan, and Muhammet Distas, has captivated audiences.
Produced by Cavdar and actor Celal Al, “Zemberek” continues to shine a spotlight on Turkish cinema on the international stage, with its awards at the RIURAU Festival further cementing its success.
