Konya’s 5th-century mosaic, artifacts to boost tourism
Konya is set to enrich its cultural landscape with the unveiling of a fifth-century mosaic and other significant artifacts, thanks to the ongoing efforts as part of the Sukran Mahallesi Urban Transformation Project.
This historical discovery promises to transform the area into a prominent archaeopark, adding substantial value to Konya’s tourism sector.
Unveiling ancient treasures in Konya
Konya Metropolitan Mayor Ugur Ibrahim Altay and Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavus recently inspected the archaeological work at the Sukran Mahallesi Urban Transformation Project site.
Mayor Altay emphasized the importance of these findings, noting, “This site has been transferred to the Metropolitan Municipality following the discovery of archaeological remains. The area is being developed into an archaeological park, which will highlight the fifth-century mosaic and other artifacts of great historical significance.”
Revitalizing Konya’s historical heart
The project aims to combine historical preservation with urban development, creating a unique center where history and tourism intersect. Mayor Altay highlighted the integration of the site into a broader cultural journey for visitors, linking it to the Mevlana Square and the Darulmulk Project.
“Our efforts are like piecing together a puzzle,” Altay said, appreciating the collaboration with the Meram Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and other stakeholders.
Renaissance of region
Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavus underscored the project’s impact on the area’s historical vibrancy.
“The region will regain its former commercial vitality and vibrancy. Visitors will experience a rich tapestry of civilizations including Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman influences within this 16,000-square-meter area,” Kavus stated.
Historic first for Konya
The excavation has already revealed a mosaic, a first for Konya’s city center, marking a significant milestone in the region’s archaeological exploration.
“The meticulous work – akin to digging with a needle – ensures the preservation of this valuable heritage. The findings will contribute greatly to both Konya’s tourism and historical understanding,” Kavus added.
Illuminating Konya’s past
The archaeological park project, which began with subsurface radar scans, will feature continuous excavation and research. Once completed, this open-air museum will offer a deep dive into Konya’s history and culture, showcasing numerous artifacts that shed light on the city’s past and enrich the local and global historical narrative.
Konya’s new archaeological park is set to become a key destination for history enthusiasts and tourists, providing an immersive experience of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
