The National Palaces Administration is currently restoring two significant historical paintings from Topkapi Palace’s Sacred Relics Collection.

These paintings, which depict the cities of Mecca and Medina in intricate detail, are being restored by the Painting Restoration and Conservation Workshop.

Restoration details

Ilhan Kocaman, head of the Topkapi Palace Department, shared insights into the restoration process. He stated, “These artworks are not only representations of Mecca and Medina but also hold documentary value.” He explained that the paintings depict the regions with precision, including examples of miniature and calligraphy art.

The restoration has been ongoing for six months and will be completed in two months. The “Mecca” painting, created in 1799 by Muzehhib El-Hac Feyzullah, measures approximately 4.5 square meters and showcases the Kaaba and surrounding areas.

This painting is notable for its detailed representation of both the interior and exterior structures of the Masjid al-Haram.

The “Medina” painting, believed to date back to the 19th century, is equally significant. Although the artist and exact date of creation are unknown, this oil painting, which is about 12.7 square feet (1.18 square meters), provides a detailed depiction of the city of Medina and the Masjid al-Nabawi. The painting incorporates elements of miniature and calligraphy art, further enhancing its historical and cultural value.

Kocaman highlighted the rarity of such paintings, noting, “Oil paintings from the Ottoman period are scarce, making these works particularly important.” The restoration involves collaborative efforts from various specialized workshops, including those for paintings, paper, and frames.

Once restored, these paintings will be exhibited in the Sacred Relics section of Topkapi Palace, specifically in the Chamber of the Holy Mantle. This will be the first time these works, which have never been displayed before, will be available for public viewing.

The meticulous restoration process includes several stages: documentation, microscopic and infrared examination, surface cleaning, consolidation, and preservation. The “Medina” painting is nearing the final stages of its restoration, while the “Mecca” painting has completed its documentation phase and will soon undergo further restoration procedures.

These restorations are part of ongoing efforts by the National Palaces Administration to preserve Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage. By restoring and displaying these historical paintings, the administration aims to provide art lovers and historians with a deeper understanding of the Ottoman period’s artistic and cultural landscape.

The completion of this project will mark a significant addition to the already extensive collection of Topkapi Palace, enhancing its status as a repository of invaluable historical artifacts.
