City that shaped ancient civilization

Knidos holds a special place in history as the home of prominent figures such as the astronomer and mathematician Eudoxus, physician Euryphon, and painter Polygnotos. It is also associated with Sostratos, the architect of the Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Situated where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet, Knidos boasts a strategic and picturesque location. A solar clock, developed by Eudoxus and considered a groundbreaking invention of its time, still stands proudly in the ancient city.

Unveiling past through year-round excavations

Accessible by both land and sea, Knidos has been a hub of archaeological research, with excavation teams working tirelessly year-round. Under the leadership of Professor Ertekin Doksanalti from Selcuk University, the excavations are now part of the “Legacy for the Future” project.

Professor Doksanalti explains that the team is focused on unearthing the city’s main arteries along with its public and religious structures. “We are not only conducting research and publishing our findings but also ensuring these areas are preserved for future generations through conservation and restoration efforts,” he said.

Remarkable mosaics unearthed in Knidos’ ancient church

One of the focal points of the excavations is the city’s main church, which dates back to the fifth to seventh centuries A.D. Professor Doksanalti highlighted the discovery of intricate floor mosaics featuring vibrant depictions of wild and domestic animals, along with floral motifs that reflect paradise imagery.

“These mosaics, showcasing figures like panthers, lions, and mountain goats, demonstrate the mastery of artisans who continued the palace-style traditions of their era,” Doksanalti stated.

In addition to the mosaics, the church’s collapsed columns and seating areas are being restored, transforming the site into a new visitor destination.

Discovery of new inscriptions offers insight

The excavations have also revealed a series of newly discovered wall inscriptions in Arabic, adding to the existing collection. These inscriptions are expected to provide significant information related to Islamic conquests in the region.

“Knidos never ceases to surprise us. We anticipate discovering more inscriptions and valuable artifacts in the ongoing excavations,” said Doksanalti.

Ancient urban planning comes to light

The team is also focusing on the city’s terrace walls, which separate its plots and parcels. These efforts have uncovered valuable insights into the city’s urban planning and its evolution from antiquity to the present day.

Knidos continues to captivate historians, archaeologists, and tourists alike, offering a window into the art, science, and daily life of ancient civilizations. With its restored structures and ongoing discoveries, the city stands as a testament to Türkiye’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
