Comedie-Francaise to make historic debut at Istanbul festival
The world-renowned Comedie-Francaise theatre troupe, with roots tracing back to the works of French playwright Moliere, is set to perform in Türkiye for the first time. The troupe will be a special guest at the 28th Istanbul Theatre Festival.
According to the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the Comedie-Francaise will stage its acclaimed play “Hecuba, Hecuba is Not”, which premiered earlier this summer at the Avignon Festival in France. The performance is scheduled for Nov. 2-3 at Harbiye Muhsin Ertugrul Stage.
Sponsored by the ENKA Foundation, the production is organized in collaboration with Institut Francais Istanbul and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) City Theatres. The play is directed by Avignon Festival’s artistic director, Tiago Rodrigues and stars acclaimed actress Elsa Lepoivre.
Inspired by both Euripides’ tragedy and real historical events, the performance presents a powerful and moving narrative.
Curated by Mehmet Birkiye, the 28th Istanbul Theatre Festival will begin on Oct. 22. For more information on the festival program, visit IKSV.
