X faces widespread outage as users report unresponsive timelines, posting failures

Users across social media reported Friday that they were unable to access X, formerly known as Twitter, as the platform experienced widespread technical disruptions affecting both mobile and web access.

Beginning around 4:20 p.m. EST on May 30, users globally — particularly in the United States, Europe and India — reported that the homepage would not load, timelines failed to refresh, and posting attempts were unsuccessful. Many turned to search engines and rival platforms to ask, “Is X down?” or “Why can’t I log in to Twitter?”

Downdetector, a service that tracks internet outages, confirmed the disruption. According to the site, 59% of complaints involved issues with the mobile app, while 41% cited problems with the website.

Cause of outage unclear

As of Friday evening, the cause of the outage remained unclear. The company had not issued an official statement regarding the nature of the problem or when service might be restored.

The outage arrives at a particularly sensitive moment for cryptocurrency traders, with memecoins surging and Bitcoin trading near record highs. Many users depend on X for real-time market sentiment, breaking news, and high-frequency trading signals.

Friday’s disruption follows another widespread outage earlier this month. X’s engineering team previously acknowledged ongoing technical issues stemming from a May 23 data center problem, which caused delays in login, failures in Premium sign-ups, and other functionality glitches.

X owner Elon Musk has not commented on the latest service interruption. However, following last week’s disruptions, Musk said he was “back to spending 24/7 at work,” managing simultaneous demands across X, Tesla and xAI amid a series of major tech deployments.
