Tripoli International Airport entrusted to Turkish company
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Libyan authorities and Terminal Yapi for the restoration and operation of Tripoli International Airport in the Libyan capital
The Libyan Airports Authority and the Turkish companies Terminal Yapi and IRG International Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to restore, operate, and carry out infrastructure works on the Tripoli International Airport, the Libyan government announced on its social media account Friday.
The project aims to upgrade Tripoli International Airport to meet International Civil Aviation Organization standards, reduce state burden by external financing, localize modern aviation technologies, and transfer knowledge and experience.
Tripoli International Airport
Located 27 kilometers (16.78 miles) south of the capital, Tripoli, in the Qasr bin Gashir region, Tripoli International Airport was built by the Italians in 1934.
Established as a military air base, the airport was first named “Regia Aeronautica.” In 1938, it was expanded and renamed “Tripoli-Castel Benito.”
It was closed to flights due to the flight ban imposed on Libyan airspace by the United Nations Security Council in March 2011.
In August of the same year, the revolutionary anti-Gadhafi Zintan Brigade took over the airport and flights resumed in October 2011.
In August 2014, after the Fajr Libya militia group attacked and took control of the airport, flights were suspended and transferred to Mitiga Airport, which was never used again.
