In a significant move for gamers across the region, Valve Corporation has officially removed Syria from its list of banned or sanctioned countries.

The decision marks a historic shift, allowing Syrian users to access and purchase games through the Steam platform legally and directly for the first time in years.

Region update now possible for Syrian residents

To reflect the change, Steam users residing in Syria can now update their store region to Syria.

However, Valve emphasized that users must physically reside in Syria and use a local payment method tied to a Syrian billing address..

"Syria has officially been removed from the banned/sanctioned list," Steam Support stated in a message sent to a user on June 6.

Valve also issued a caution regarding the use of IP proxies and VPNs.

Users are advised to disable any such software before attempting to make purchases, as it may interfere with the region verification process.

Whether used knowingly or not, VPNs could prevent users from successfully changing their region to Syria.

Permanent region change policy

Steam also clarified that once a store region is updated, it cannot be changed again unless the user physically relocates to another country or region. This policy underscores the importance of entering accurate location data.
