Turkish energy company Karpowership, through its energy transition initiative Kinetics, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) on Monday to jointly develop the world’s first integrated floating data center platform.

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on designing, building, and distributing a state-of-the-art data center housed on a repurposed vessel.

The facility will be powered by uninterrupted and dedicated energy, sourced from flexible power solutions—including Karpowership’s own floating power plants, known as Powerships.

Floating data hub for flexible growth

According to a statement from the Japanese company, once completed, the platform will be the first of its kind in the region with floating capabilities.

Depending on the project location and customer needs, land-based networks, land-based solar power plants, offshore wind power, or other energy production solutions can also be integrated.

With over 20 years of experience, the company has delivered more than 10,000 MW of installed power across 19 countries.

CEO of the Kinetics company, Mehmet Katmer, stated about the energy sector, “This project is of great importance in line with our vision at Kinetics: to provide innovative, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure solutions that meet the energy needs of today and tomorrow.

By combining mobile energy production with floating data infrastructure, it provides solutions to critical bottlenecks and enables digital capacity to grow faster, cleaner, and more flexibly.”

World’s first floating data center by 2027

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Karpowership’s energy transition arm, Kinetics, have signed an agreement to build the world’s first floating data center.

The project aims to deliver high-performance digital infrastructure with a low environmental footprint, powered by Karpowership’s floating power plants.

Tomoaki Ichida, Executive Board Member at MOL, called the agreement a major step toward building digital infrastructure faster and greener.

“By using our maritime expertise, we’re not only supporting the future of data but doing it in a way that’s mindful of the environment. We’re committed to expanding our role in essential infrastructure and meeting society’s changing needs,” he said.

This collaboration is the first of its kind between the two companies. If all goes according to plan, the floating data center will be up and running by 2027.
