Eurasian Development Bank Chairperson Nikolay Podguzov suggests Türkiye’s potential future membership, highlighting its pivotal role in the region amid close economic and cultural ties with member countries

Nikolay Podguzov, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Development Bank, said that Türkiye plays a significant role in the Central Asian region and has close economic and cultural ties with member countries of the bank, suggesting that Türkiye could become a member of the bank in the future.

Podguzov made these remarks while attending the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington.

Podguzov emphasized the importance of the Spring Meetings as a platform for representatives of other multilateral development banks to come together and compare their approaches to global challenges.

He noted that considering global uncertainties, the world is faced with challenges such as climate change and financial deficits.

Bank focuses on infrastructure, transportation, logistics

Regarding the bank’s focus areas, Podguzov explained that the Eurasian Development Bank primarily concentrates on three main topics crucial for the Eurasian region: enhancing connectivity infrastructure, transportation and logistics in Central Asia; increasing energy and water resources; and ensuring food security.

Highlighting the bank’s cumulative investment portfolio of $15 billion, Podguzov mentioned that since its establishment in 2006, the Eurasian Development Bank has invested approximately $15 billion in the economies of its member countries.

While emphasizing their focus on investments in Central Asia, Podguzov noted that Kazakhstan is a key focal point of their activities, with the bank having invested over $2 billion in the Kazakh economy in the last two years.

Regarding Türkiye’s relationship with the Eurasian Development Bank, despite not being a member country, Podguzov said: “Türkiye plays a very important role in the region and has close economic and cultural ties with member countries of the bank.”

He also mentioned the support provided by the bank to Türkiye during last year’s earthquakes and expressed hope for eventual membership.
