Electricity prices in Türkiye to rise by 25%: Media

Following requests from electricity distribution companies, Türkiye’s energy authorities have completed preparations for a 25% increase in electricity prices, effective April 1, according to Turkish media reports.
An official announcement is expected this week from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), confirming the new tariff. This price hike will directly impact both industrial businesses and residential consumers across the country.

Hike in electricity prices in Türkiye after 9 months
This is the first increase in electricity prices in Türkiye since July 2024, despite ongoing inflationary pressures in Türkiye.
According to Turkish media reports, distribution companies, facing declining profitability, have expressed concerns over financial strain during discussions with Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.
In an effort to assist households, the Turkish government has allocated a ₺230 billion ($6.05 billion) subsidy for electricity bills in 2025, as announced by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar on Jan. 30.

How rising electricity prices in Türkiye will affect households?
However, a new adjustment, which took effect on Feb. 1, has excluded households consuming more than 417 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from the subsidy. This exclusion results in a significant increase in electricity bills, with costs rising by at least 93% for affected households, placing a heavier financial burden on many residents in Türkiye.

With the price hike, the policy introduced in February, which removes government subsidies once consumption exceeds 417 kWh, will remain in effect.
The threshold, which previously impacted bills exceeding approximately ₺1,050, will now rise to about ₺1,315 after the increase. Subscribers who exceed this threshold will be required to pay double the normal electricity charges.
