Germany’s Scholz, Zelenskyy discuss paths to ‘just peace’ for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explored potential paths toward a “just peace” during a phone call Friday, according to a government spokesman.
During their discussion of recent developments and Ukraine‘s humanitarian situation, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Germany’s strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense, said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
“The Chancellor reaffirmed Germany’s ongoing and unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and assured continued military support in close coordination with European and international partners,” the spokesman said.
“The Chancellor and President agreed to continue their constructive exchange, also with a view to possible paths to a just peace in Ukraine, and to remain in close contact,” he added.
Scholz held a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Nov. 15, their first direct communication in almost two years. He said he asked Putin to end the Russian war against Ukraine, which continues since 2022, and to withdraw his troops.
Zelenskyy had criticized the conversation, saying it opened a “Pandora’s box.”
