Türkiye may take action against Google over algorithm impact, says transport minister
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu Saturday addressed allegations that Google’s latest algorithm update caused significant drops in user traffic for independent websites, stating, “We will take necessary steps if we determine any injustice.”
During a live broadcast on CNN Turk, Uraloglu explained that Google’s Türkiye representatives informed the ministry they had not yet been briefed about the update by Google’s global office.
He added that the ministry had contacted Google Türkiye again and was awaiting further clarification.
Uraloglu also emphasized that Google could face legal action from the Turkish Competition Authority, depending on their response.
Reports indicate that user traffic to independent media outlets on platforms like “Google News” and “Google Discover” has recently dropped by up to 80%.
While the decline in visibility is believed to be linked to Google’s algorithm update, the company has not issued an official statement.
