Türkiye’s Ministry of Education has launched significant reforms in education with the “Century of Türkiye Education Model”, which includes a reorganization of history education. In the updated curriculum, the term “Central Asia” has been changed to “Turkistan.”

Experts have noted that the ministry’s focus on Turkistan signifies a commitment to instilling a sense of Turkish identity, national awareness, and patriotism in future generations.

The ministry’s overhaul of history education will affect preschool, first-grade, fifth-grade, high school preparatory, and ninth-grade levels. The Ministry of Education stated it aims to eliminate outdated and scientifically inaccurate terms from the curriculum in favor of more precise language.

Importance of embracing Turkistan

Speaking to Turkish state-run news channel TRT Haber, Historian Associate Professor Dr. Ramin Sadik emphasized the significance of recognizing Turkistan in educational materials. “Embracing the concept of Turkistan is essential, and the Ministry of Education is right to incorporate it into textbooks,” he said.

Türkiye is synonymous with Turkistan, referring to the region where Turks predominantly reside. The naming preferences of others regarding that area are irrelevant. We must honor our own history, culture, and heritage. The Ministry has taken a crucial step in this direction,” he added.

Origins of the term Turkistan

Meanwhile, Historian Professor Dr. Ahmet Tasagil explained that the shift from “Turkistan” to “Central Asia” originated during the Russian invasion. “The term Turkistan, meaning ‘land of Turks,’ has been in use since ancient times. However, following the Russian invasion in the late 19th century, ‘Central Asia’ became the prevalent term,” Tasagil said.

“Turkistan encompasses a vast region that stretches from Iran’s Khorasan province, including Northern Afghanistan, to China’s Dunhuang area,” he noted.
