Greek PM Mitsotakis urges courage in resolving maritime disputes with Türkiye

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the need for bold action in resolving maritime boundary disputes with Türkiye, calling it a “window of opportunity” during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Mitsotakis reiterated that both nations must be brave and wise to capitalize on the current opportunity to resolve the long-standing issues regarding the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones (EEZ).

Courage in maritime disputes

“There is a window of opportunity today, and we must be brave and wise to seize it,” Mitsotakis stated, referring to the unresolved maritime disputes that have persisted between Greece and Türkiye for over 40 years. He met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s recent remarks on defining maritime boundaries in accordance with international law, noting that such a resolution would benefit the entire Eastern Mediterranean region.

Mitsotakis highlighted his ongoing efforts to improve relations with Türkiye, citing six meetings with President Erdgan over the past year.

“We will continue to seek new avenues to improve our bilateral relations with Türkiye,” he said, emphasizing the importance of cooperation on shared challenges like climate change and migration. “We are keeping communication channels open to mitigate any potential tensions,” he added.

Cyprus issue

On the Cyprus issue, Mitsotakis rejected the idea of a two-state solution, which has been proposed by some parties.

He expressed Greece’s support for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres‘ efforts to restart negotiations. “We invite Türkiye and the Turkish Cypriot community to come to the negotiating table and build mutual trust for a fair and sustainable solution that is acceptable to both sides,” Mitsotakis said.

Middle East and Palestine

Turning his attention to the Middle East, Mitsotakis warned of the escalating tensions in Palestine and the potential for a broader conflict in the region. “The rising tensions pose a real threat of general war in the region,” he said.

He called on all parties, including Iran, to avoid perpetuating the cycle of violence and to engage constructively in deescalation efforts.

Mitsotakis also stressed the need for peace in Lebanon and fully supported Greece’s 21-day cease-fire proposal. Regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Mitsotakis highlighted the urgent need for access to food, water, shelter, and medical supplies.

“Safe access to food, water, shelter, clothing, and medicine must be ensured. International humanitarian law must be respected,” he said.
