Iranian President Pezeshkian calls for stronger ties with Türkiye
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described Türkiye as a “friend and brother,” emphasizing deep familial ties that extend beyond mere neighborliness. In his first press conference since taking office in Tehran, Pezeshkian expressed optimism about improving relations with Türkiye and other Islamic countries.
Strengthening ties with Türkiye
In response to questions about Türkiye-Iran relations, Pezeshkian reiterated the need to bolster these ties, saying, “We must definitely strengthen our relations with Türkiye. Our beliefs and cultures are intertwined. The border drawn between us does not change the fact that both sides are one.”
He affirmed his commitment to continuing the previous administration’s focus on good neighborly relations and outlined plans to reach a $30 billion trade volume goal with Türkiye.
Pezeshkian proposed joint investments not only in Iran and Türkiye but also in neighboring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, aiming to facilitate easier travel and economic exchange.
Future visit to Türkiye
Pezeshkian confirmed plans to visit Türkiye soon, stating, “We will definitely visit Türkiye and invite politicians, academics, and investors. We are hopeful about our relations with Türkiye and other Islamic countries.”
Keeping open door to US
Meanwhile, regarding U.S. relations, Pezeshkian suggested that the U.S. should demonstrate it is not an adversary.
“We have not established bases around the U.S. or imposed sanctions,” he said, keeping the door open for future dialogue under favorable conditions.
