Türkiye mourns with Rwanda on the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsis, offering condolences and reaffirming its stance against crimes against humanity

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep sorrow on the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, which occurred in 1994.

In a written statement regarding the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, the Ministry stated that the tragic events of 1994 are remembered with profound sadness.

The statement noted that the lives lost are once again respectfully commemorated, and condolences are extended to the grieving Rwandan state and people.

The statement highlighted the achievements of Rwanda in achieving social peace, national unity, and promoting economic and social development over the past 30 years. It expressed the wish for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in Rwanda.

The announcement also mentioned that Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz will participate in the “30th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsis” to be held in Rwandan capital Kigali on April 7.

The Ministry reaffirmed Türkiye’s stance against all forms of crimes against humanity, racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and extremist ideologies.

In 1994, Hutus in Rwanda initiated a genocide against the Tutsis, blaming them for the plane crash that killed then-President Juvenal Habyarimana. The 100-day massacre resulted in the loss of over 800,000 Tutsi lives in the country.
