Taiwan’s annual military drills will include sea “kill” zones to simulate countering a potential Chinese attack scenario, the defense ministry announced

Taiwan’s yearly military exercises this year will include practicing “kill” zones at sea to breach a blockade and simulate a scenario in which China unexpectedly transforms one of its routine drills near the island into a real attack, as announced by the defense ministry on Tuesday.

Concerned about China’s increasing activities in the region, which aim to unify Taiwan with the mainland under the “One China Policy,” Taiwanese authorities have announced that they are evaluating scenarios for responding to a possible Chinese attack.

Will China intervene in Taiwan?

It was noted that the exercises will involve naval, air, and coastal security forces. Taiwanese officials believe that Russia’s victory in Ukraine would embolden China.

China, on the other hand, emphasizes that it values a peaceful reunification with Taiwan with the use of force as a last resort.

Taiwan issue

The civil war between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party in China, which continued after World War II, ended in 1949 with the victory of the Communist Party, and the nationalists sought refuge in Taiwan. Until 1971, Taiwan represented China in the United Nations, and after 1971, the People’s Republic of China was recognized.

The Beijing government insists that China’s sovereignty over Taiwan is indisputable. While China mentions that provocative steps taken by the United States and Western allies regarding Taiwan could be a cause for war, top Western politicians conduct diplomatic visits to Taiwan.
