Discover Türkiye’s first underwater archaeopark in Kocaeli, where diving enthusiasts can explore ancient treasures from the Black Sea.

The “Kerpe Underwater Excavation and Research” project is uncovering remarkable artifacts, which will soon be showcased in an innovative underwater park.

These date from the fourth century B.C. to the 12th century A.D., including Roman-era relics, Late Roman artifacts and Ottoman items.

Significant finds include amphoras, Ottoman pipes, and lamps, showcasing ancient trade routes and cultural exchanges from regions such as North Africa, Georgia, the Marmara, and Cilicia.

Exclusive underwater experience

Serkan Geduk, formerly head of the Kocaeli Museum and now a branch manager at the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, leads the project. Together with Kocaeli’s Director of Culture and Tourism, Fatih Tasdelen, Geduk has overseen the installation of stainless steel frames to protect and display the artifacts.

Once completed, the underwater archaeopark will allow divers to view these historical treasures at a depth of just five meters through glass-covered platforms.

Supported by the Eastern Marmara Development Agency and developed with the Kandıra Municipality, the archaeopark is set to become a major attraction for cultural tourism.

Visitors will explore submerged commercial amphora remains, ceramics, and Ottoman artifacts, with additional tourism packages covering nearby cultural destinations, ancient ruins and diving tours of partially visible shipwrecks.
