US, Chinese defense ministers hold their first dialogue since 2022

During a video teleconference with his Chinese counterpart, U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin stressed the importance of keeping military channels open between the U.S. and China

As confirmed by the Pentagon on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin held an important dialogue with his Chinese counterpart Adm. Dong Jun.

This was the first communication between the two officials and the first direct interaction between military leaders since November 2022.

According to a statement released by the Pentagon, Austin and Dong held their meeting via video conference on Tuesday. They discussed a range of issues, including U.S.-China defense dynamics and regional and global security concerns.

According to an official Pentagon statement, Austin told Dong on Tuesday that keeping military communication channels open between the U.S. and China is critical.

Austin reiterated the importance of the November agreement between U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to resume phone calls between their respective military commanders.

This reaffirmation underscores the continued commitment of both countries to constructive dialogue and conflict resolution.

Taiwan was the focal point of the meeting. Dong underlined its importance, stating that issues related to the island were central to China’s core interests, which must remain inviolable.

Echoing China’s longstanding position, Dong firmly conveyed to Secretary Austin that the People’s Liberation Army opposes any actions by Taiwan or external actors that could be seen as promoting Taiwan’s independence. This statement seems to hint at the Biden administration’s efforts to strengthen U.S.-Taiwan relations, including military cooperation.
