Türkiye boosts naval power as first reis-class submarine TCG Piri Reis set to join fleet
In a landmark move to enhance Türkiye’s maritime strength, the Turkish navy is set to welcome its first Reis-class submarine – the TCG Piri Reis.
This development marks a significant boost to the nation’s underwater capabilities and represents a key milestone in its defense strategy.
Main event
On August 24, 2024, a major ceremony will take place at Aksaz Shipyard Command, attended by the President, to mark the commissioning of the TCG Piri Reis. This ceremony will also feature the flag-raising for the Hizirreis submarine, signaling the start of its sea trials, while the Muratreis submarine will begin its fitting-out process, further strengthening the fleet.
Expansion of naval capabilities
- Additional enhancements: The event will also see the induction of the Yakit 2-3-4 fuel ships and the world’s largest 3,000-ton submarine floating dock, both of which are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Turkish navy.
- Strategic importance: These additions aim to increase Türkiye’s deterrence and effectiveness in regional waters, reflecting the country’s commitment to strengthening its naval defense through indigenous production.
The reis-class submarines
The REİS-class submarines, based on the German Type 214 design, are being constructed at the Gölcük Shipyard in Türkiye. Equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, these submarines can conduct prolonged underwater operations without surfacing, thanks to a combination of diesel engines, batteries, and fuel cells.
Technical specifications
- Displacement: 1,860 tons (surface), 2,013 tons (submerged)
- Length: 67.6 meters
- Crew: 27 personnel, with an additional 11 SAT (Underwater Offense) team members
- Speed: 10 knots on the surface, 20 knots underwater
- Range: 12,000 nautical miles at 6 knots (surface), 420 nautical miles at 8 knots (submerged)
Future outlook
Türkiye plans to commission one submarine each year, with all six REİS-class submarines expected to be operational by 2028.
These submarines are set to play a crucial role in Türkiye’s naval strategy, enhancing regional deterrence and laying the groundwork for future domestic submarine projects, contributing to the growth of the national defense industry.
