N. Korea warns Japan of satellite launch
North Korea has notified the Japanese Coast Guard of its plan to launch a satellite into orbit between May 27 and June 3. This announcement has raised security concerns on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding areas as North Korea continues its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. Pyongyang warned that the rocket or rocket debris carrying the satellite could fall into the Yellow Sea or the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines. In response, the Japanese Coast Guard has urged ships in the area to remain vigilant.
Successful spy satellite launch
After two failed attempts in May and August of last year, North Korea successfully placed the Malligyong-1 spy satellite into orbit back in November. The Pyongyang administration has announced plans to launch more satellites in 2024.
