A 16-year-old boy was shot dead after stabbing a man in Perth, Western Australia

A 16-year-old boy was shot dead in Perth, capital of Western Australia, after stabbing a man, Australian police said Sunday.

The attacker, who was carrying a kitchen knife, showed signs of radicalization online, causing concern in the local Muslim community before the attack in the suburb of Willetton late Saturday night.

Although the incident has the “hallmarks” of terrorism, it has not yet been classified as an act of terrorism, according to local police.

Premier Roger Cook said the attacker appeared to have acted alone. The victim, who was stabbed in the back, is in a stable condition in hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized Australia’s stance against violent extremism, stating that it is not an ongoing threat.

“We are a peace-loving nation and there is no place for violent extremism in Australia,” Albanese stated on social media.

This incident follows terrorism-related charges against several youths in New South Wales following the stabbing of an Assyrian Christian bishop during a live-streamed sermon in Sydney on April 15.  

Additionally, a stabbing in Bondi shortly before the attack on the bishop resulted in the deaths of six people.

According to the federal government, gun and knife crime is rare in Australia, which is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world.
