Turkish journalist Ismail Saymaz detained in Gezi Park investigation

Journalist Ismail Saymaz has been detained as part of an investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into the Gezi Park protests, authorities announced Wednesday. Saymaz’s passport was confiscated this week.
Saymaz accused of aiding alleged government overthrow attempt
Saymaz was taken into custody on allegations of “aiding an attempt to overthrow the government of Türkiye,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
Officials claim that Saymaz had extensive contact with Gezi Park protest defendants, including Mehmet Osman Kavala, Serafettin Can Atalay, Cigdem Mater Utku, and Ayse Mucella Yapici, during the protests.
Investigators allege that Saymaz played an active role in the protests, shared misleading information on social media, and attempted to incite the public against law enforcement. Saymaz currently has 4 million followers on X, and is known as one of the most prominent opposition journalists in Türkiye.
Additionally, authorities claim that Saymaz was involved in the creation of a website for Kavala and had conversations with individuals planning to establish a television channel to publicize the demonstrations.

Police search Saymaz’s residence
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed that police conducted a search of Saymaz’s home as part of the ongoing investigation. The extent of any potential evidence obtained remains unclear.
Saymaz, a journalist and TV program host for pro-opposition Halk TV, is known for his coverage of political and legal issues in Türkiye.
