Italy approves new penalties for vandalizing cultural property

The government also plans to use the revenue collected from fines for the maintenance and restoration of damaged cultural assets

The right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni took action after the frequent attacks on cultural assets by climate activists in different cities of Italy in recent years.

The regulation, which imposed fines between 20,000 euros to 60,000 euros ($22,000-$65,000) for those who damage the country’s cultural assets, was approved in Parliament today.

According to Italian media reports, the government aims to stop the protests with this regulation. It also plans to use the revenue collected from fines for the maintenance and restoration of damaged cultural assets.
